On Telecommuting and Using the Tech We Have | Gear Diary

So this co-worker of mine just had his first child.

When Sami and I had Maggie (in the Booming 90′s), I took two weeks off, and then worked half-time (for half-pay) for, I think, two months.  This was my manager’s offer instead of me taking off a full month (without pay)  for Family Leave, which was a pretty new law then.  Sami and I talked it over, and we decided that was the best course of action.  But I was completely unavailable for two weeks, and for the next couple of months I was–how shall we put this?–at quite a bit less than my best.  I was of course tired all the time, short of sleep, and commuting in but only for half-days.  So I had a full slate of commuting, but was getting only about half the office-time benefit out of it, if you see what I mean.
